Fleet Support Group Gives Cancer Sufferers Hope For Tomorrow With Summer Fund-raising Campaign

Big-hearted Fleet Support Group is continuing its support for south west-based cancer charity Hope for Tomorrow with backing for two major fund-raising events this summer.

On Saturday, June 14, Chippenham-based Fleet Support Group, which operates a fleet of more than 50,000 vehicles in the UK, is sponsoring a team at the Chartwell Polo Day being organised by the charity and taking place at the Beaufort Polo Club near Tetbury.

And the company is also backing and entering a team in Hope for Tomorrow’s Charity Golf Tournament being held from July 20-22 at The Manor House Hotel and Golf Club, Castle Combe, Wiltshire.

Last year, Hope for Tomorrow successfully launched the first mobile chemotherapy unit in the UK - and probably the world. The state of the art unit cost in the region of £150,000 to design, build and equip, meeting the exacting standard for NHS health and safety requirements. It is also eqipped with wheelchair access, a treatment room for up to five patients at a time, a carers room and the latest technology to provide a safe, hygenic and comfortable environment for patients and staff.

Run by the oncology team from the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, the unit, which is part sponsored by Fleet Support Group, began treating chemotherapy patients in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire and Worcestershire in spring last year.

The Mercedes-Benz unit has a bespoke body designed and built by Conestoga and WHF Ltd, who build many of the Formula One hospitality units. The unit can treat five people on board at any one time - up to 20 patients a day.

The charity’s chairman and patron Lord MacLaurin, formerly chairman of Vodafone, is also an investor in Fleet Support Group. Other charity patrons include racing legends Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jack Brabham and Derek Bell. The patrons are all actively involved with the charity and regularly attend fundraising events.

The charity is amiing to fund a fleet of similar units for operation nationwide and Fleet Support Group chairman Geoffrey Bray said: “I am sure that everyone in the fleet industry has been touched by losing a loved one from cancer.

“The company has adopted Hope for Tomorrow because it is vital to raise money for a hugely worthwhile cause and help those with cancer, their families and dependants to cope with the reality of the situation.

“The charity is currently nearing completion in fundraising for its second mobile chemotherapy unit and in addition to our continued support, we wish them every success.”

Hope for Tomorrow was launched in December 2003 by Christine Mills of Tetbury in memory of her husband, David, to provide support via special projects and offer general advice through information leaflets to people who are directly affected by cancer.
